Movement Matters: My Fitness Journey

Cherie’s transformative journey through various sports and activities reveals the importance of physical wellness for her and her family. A vibrant sports facility in the heart of Markham, Ontario, plays a central role in this adventure, featuring insights from a Badminton Olympian as a bonus!

Cherie grew up in the Philippines, where after-school hours meant gathering with friends to play simple yet meaningful games that brought joy without needing much physicality. Those were the days of Chinese garter, “Piko” (hopscotch), and “jackstone”—the cherished games of the ’70s and ’80s. Though these games didn’t require athletic skill, they filled Cherie’s childhood with memorable connections and fun.

Discovering Yoga and the Power of Active Meditation

As a young mother, Cherie found herself gravitating toward yoga. Without a sports background, she initially struggled with physical activities but soon discovered a passion for yoga that grew into a love for both movement and active meditation. Yoga became her sanctuary, a space to find calm amidst life’s challenges, especially during the demanding days of motherhood. Yoga offered her a much-needed release—physically and mentally.

However, in her 40s, injuries led her to step back from yoga, leaving her feeling restless and in need of a new outlet. To regain her strength and improve her mood, she began working with a personal trainer. Through guided exercise, she found healing, both physically and emotionally, reaffirming her belief in the power of movement for mental health.

Embracing Dance and Exploring New Fitness Adventures

While living in Canada, Cherie explored different ways to stay active. She stumbled upon dance classes and soon found herself trying new moves in the local dance studios of Toronto. Though she wasn’t a professional dancer, Cherie embraced the experience wholeheartedly, letting go of self-consciousness and enjoying the rhythm and freedom that dance provided.

Cherie also introduced her kids to a variety of physical activities, like badminton, boxing, ballet, and even K-pop dance. Her husband, skilled in racket sports, was thrilled to join in family badminton games, an activity that everyone could enjoy. The simplicity of badminton made it accessible, giving them a fun way to bond and stay active together.

Discovering Canada’s Community Centers and Family-Friendly Activities

Cherie quickly learned that Canada’s community centers are a treasure trove of accessible sports and fitness activities. From puppy yoga to wrestling and paddleboarding, these centers offer a range of classes and activities for all age groups. Cherie shared her experience navigating the sometimes confusing process of signing up for these programs, from reserving spots to understanding age-group schedules. She learned that many centers even offer dedicated time slots for families or specific age ranges, creating a welcoming environment for everyone.

Finding a New Fitness Community in Markham

Cherie discovered a fantastic multisport facility in Markham, where she and her family could enjoy activities like basketball, badminton, and even golf simulators. Open 24 hours, this facility offers something for everyone, catering to all types of schedules and making it easier for shift workers and night owls to stay active.

The facility’s badminton program, led by a former Olympian, highlights a commitment to quality. With world-class courts and equipment, it provides a perfect environment for beginners, enthusiasts, and even aspiring athletes. Cherie marveled at the facility’s dedication to creating a safe, high-quality space, which makes a difference for anyone looking to pursue sports seriously.

Encouraging Kids to Embrace Movement: The Role of Parents

Cherie emphasizes the importance of encouraging kids to try various physical activities, rather than letting them spend hours on their gadgets. She notes that while children may initially resist, the benefits of physical activity become clear over time. Just as her own parents encouraged her to play and stay active, Cherie is now passing on this value to her children.

Cherie’s conversation with Rachel, the facility’s manager and former Olympian, revealed a powerful insight: parental support can make a significant difference. Rachel shared that her own parents encouraged her to try different sports, ultimately allowing her to choose her favorite—badminton. They supported her decision wholeheartedly, even driving her to distant training facilities, a commitment that led her to Olympic-level success.

Finding Balance and Joy Through Fitness

Cherie’s journey highlights a beautiful blend of tradition and exploration. From her childhood games in the Philippines to discovering yoga, dance, and community sports in Canada, she has embraced every opportunity to stay active and find joy in movement. Her story reminds us that physical activity isn’t just about fitness—it’s about bonding, mental well-being, and the joy of self-discovery at any age.

Whether through family badminton games or late-night dance sessions, Cherie continues to inspire others to embrace movement as a way of life, encouraging families to step away from screens and find fulfillment in the simple joy of play.
