Marcelina’s: The Heart of Filipino Home Cooking in Toronto

When you step inside Marcelina’s on Wilson Avenue, it feels less like a restaurant and more like home. The tables are simple, the space cozy, and the welcome always warm. But behind every plate of pancit and every smile that greets you is a story of family, faith, and Filipino pride.

The restaurant began as Aristocrat in the mid-1990s, founded by a family of nurses turned entrepreneurs. It was one of the first Filipino restaurants in the Wilson area. For years, siblings helped each other run the place—cooking, serving, and cleaning—all to bring a taste of the Philippines to Toronto.

In 2021, one sister, Evelyn, took over the business and renamed it Marcelina’s in honor of their mother. “She loved coming here,” Evelyn says. “She would stay until closing. I wanted to keep her memory alive.”

Many think Evelyn is Marcelina, and she doesn’t mind. “I’m proud to be called her name,” she smiles. “She’s my hero.”

Regulars come from as far as Vancouver, Saskatchewan, and Winnipeg. “They tell me their friends said, ‘If you visit Toronto, don’t miss Marcelina’s,’” Evelyn shares proudly. “It’s small, but it feels like home.”

The most famous dish? Their Pancit Mix, topped with crispy lechon kawali, shrimp, chicken, and vegetables. “People say it’s to die for,” she laughs. “Maybe it’s because the servings are big but the price stays the same.”

By day, Marcelina’s serves families. By night, it turns into a karaoke bar, where laughter, stories, and music fill the air. Evelyn jokes that she doesn’t sing anymore—“If I do, they might not come back!”

Now 75, she still serves tables, cleans up, and chats with every customer. A nurse by training, she listens when people open up about life and offers gentle advice. “I didn’t pray for this business,” she says, “but maybe God put me here for a reason—to make people happy.”

At Marcelina’s, the food fills the stomach, but it’s Evelyn’s spirit that fills the room. A reminder that sometimes, the best restaurants aren’t about fame or design—they’re about heart.
