Josie De Leon: Building Confidence, One Performance at a Time

At first glance, JDL Performing Arts looks like a simple kids’ theatre program. But step inside on rehearsal day, and you’ll find something much deeper—community, creativity, and heart.

Founded by Josie De Leon, a singer and actress whose love for the stage began in her youth, JDL was born from a desire to give Filipino children in Toronto a place to grow—not just in talent, but in confidence. “Whatever I’ve learned, I wanted to share,” Josie says. “That’s what triggered me to start the school.”

Fifteen years later, JDL has grown into three thriving branches across the GTA: Mississauga, Central, and Scarborough. Josie’s team of dedicated mentors—many former students themselves—help guide children through dance, drama, and song. In each branch, kids are currently preparing for JDL Goes Disney, a joyful end-of-semester showcase featuring segments from EncantoFrozenMoanaBeauty and the Beast, and more.

It’s more than just learning how to perform. Josie and her team teach discipline, build friendships, and help young voices—many of them Filipino—be heard loud and proud. Parents are part of the process too, volunteering time and energy to support their kids’ dreams.

For Josie, JDL isn’t just a business. “It’s 90% heart,” she says. “Maybe even 99%.”

From homemade costumes to standing ovations, JDL Performing Arts is proof that when passion meets purpose, a whole generation can shine.
