For Enrique Beniqued, life has always been about creating opportunities and embracing the unknown. Fueled by a deep love for travel and grounded by the support of his hardworking family, he has seamlessly blended his passions with a burgeoning career in filmmaking. From humble beginnings to the spotlight of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Enrique’s story is one of resilience, discovery, and a commitment to amplifying Filipino voices on the global stage.
From Dreams of Travel to the World of Film
Growing up in the Philippines, Enrique always dreamed of traveling. “Traveling has been my biggest motivation,” he says. After earning a business degree, he sought a career that would allow him to see the world. This dream led him to Canada in late 2019 to enroll in Seneca College’s Lifestyle Media program.
However, life had other plans. Shortly after his arrival, the pandemic shut down the travel industry, forcing Enrique to rethink his path. “I didn’t know much about the Canadian film industry or TIFF,” he admits. But his adaptability and determination soon led him to the film world, where he discovered a passion for storytelling and collaboration.
Diving Into Film: The Making of a Producer
Enrique’s journey into film began with small steps, including a part-time job at Scotiabank Arena and a first film credit in a Drake music video. “The only things I knew about Canada were the Raptors and Drake,” he laughs. But these experiences laid the foundation for a career that quickly gained momentum.
As a producer, Enrique describes his role as multifaceted: problem-solver, creative partner, and logistical mastermind. “Anyone can be a producer,” he explains. “It’s about making the film happen, finding the right people, and giving the project its best chance to succeed.”
Spotlight on Village Keeper
Enrique’s latest project, Village Keeper, premiered at TIFF 2024 and explores themes of grief, mental health, and generational trauma. Directed by Karen Chapman, the film tells the story of a mother navigating loss after her neighborhood is struck by gun violence. “At its heart, it’s a love letter to mothers,” Enrique shares.
The film’s journey has been remarkable, with screenings at TIFF, Vancouver Film Festival, and Edmonton Film Festival, as well as plans for a theatrical release in Canada and discussions for international distribution. “It’s a testament to what women can do,” Enrique says, highlighting that Chapman directed the film while eight months pregnant.
Filipino Roots and Global Ambitions
Enrique’s Filipino heritage remains a driving force in his work. “I want to tell Filipino stories,” he says, emphasizing the importance of representation in media. As the only Asian nominated for the Canadian Media Producers Association’s Emerging Producer award this year, Enrique views his success as a responsibility to pave the way for others.
Despite his success, homesickness lingers. “I haven’t been home in four years,” he shares. Screening Village Keeper in the Philippines would be a dream come true. “It would be incredible to share it with friends, family, and mothers back home.”
Life in Toronto: A Hub for Creativity
Living in Toronto’s Entertainment District has been both inspiring and convenient for Enrique. “It’s close to everything—work, events, and the heart of film at TIFF,” he says. The energy of the city, combined with its diversity and opportunities, has been a perfect fit for his ambitions.
Looking Ahead: Creating Stories That Matter
As Enrique looks to the future, his focus is clear: to create high-quality films that amplify underrepresented voices. “Producing is not just logistical; it’s creative,” he says. His work with Village Keeper and his participation in TIFF’s Every Story Accelerator program have solidified his commitment to storytelling that resonates deeply with audiences.
“Every experience, even failures, has shaped who I am today,” Enrique reflects. “It’s about staying disciplined, keeping your head down, and doing the work.”
A Journey Just Beginning
For Enrique Beniqued, the journey has been as enriching as the destination. From a young boy in Quezon City dreaming of travel to an emerging producer on the global film stage, his story is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of storytelling.
As Enrique continues to create, dream, and inspire, one thing is certain: his journey is far from over. And with each step, he carries with him the love, values, and heritage that have made him who he is today.
