FTV IRL Episode 2: Behind the Scenes and On the Stage

Toronto isn’t just a hub for diverse cultures—it’s also a stage for the vibrant sounds of Original Pilipino Music (OPM). At the heart of it all is FTV Studios, where the spotlight isn’t just on artists but also on the dedicated team working behind the scenes. Here’s a glimpse into what goes on at FTV, from the hustle of setting up to the thrill of watching iconic OPM bands perform.

A Day at FTV Studios

Walking into FTV Studios, you immediately feel the energy. On this particular day, we were there to pick up equipment for a taping session with Joel Recla for Panorama. But things quickly turned into a mini-reunion of sorts when we caught Drei, the unsung hero of the day, lugging a teleprompter all by herself. Drei is just one of the many hardworking people at FTV who make the magic happen.

One of the studio’s proudest achievements is its OPM Livestream, which airs live on Facebook every Friday. This initiative brings Filipino artists from across Canada to showcase their talents. From local bands to seasoned professionals, the platform celebrates the rich musical heritage of the Philippines. Among the standout performances? Bitter and Broke’s soulful tunes and Call In Sick’s electrifying sets.

The Stage Where Magic Happens

This very studio stage has hosted some of the biggest names in OPM, including the legendary Ben&Ben. Their 2022 concert here was a highlight for fans, with a setup as intricate as their music. The band played their hearts out, leaving everyone in awe, and proving that FTV Studios is more than just a venue—it’s a place where unforgettable memories are created.

Another memorable moment was seeing the band Do and Dons open for the Itchyworms. Their energy set the tone for a night to remember, showcasing how FTV not only promotes established acts but also uplifts emerging talents.

Experiencing the Itchyworms

Fast forward to the Itchyworms concert at Davenport, and the excitement was palpable. From the opening acts like Do and Donts, Majarlika, and Fall Over, to the headliners themselves, every performance was a testament to the thriving OPM scene in Toronto. The night wasn’t just about music; it was an experience—a communal celebration of Filipino artistry far from home.

From Production to Pure Enjoyment

For those who work behind the scenes, enjoying a concert is a rare treat. As one FTV team member reflected, “It’s been a long time since I watched a concert without being on production duty.” For once, they could focus solely on the music, soaking in every note and every lyric.

That break reminded them of the joy concerts bring—not just as a form of entertainment, but as a way to escape, recharge, and connect. The team even reminisced about past events, like the RiverMaya concert, where they had to keep up with Bamboo’s boundless energy as he darted across the stage. While those moments were challenging, they were also rewarding, cementing FTV’s role in capturing OPM history in Toronto.

A Call for More OPM in Toronto

The Itchyworms concert ended on a high note, leaving everyone hoping for more. For fans, it was an evening of pure nostalgia and joy. For the FTV team, it was another successful event in the books. Their wish? To see more OPM artists grace Toronto stages and continue to unite the Filipino community through music.

Closing Note:
FTV Studios isn’t just a place; it’s a platform that amplifies Filipino talent and brings people together through the universal language of music. Whether it’s through livestreams, concerts, or behind-the-scenes stories, FTV keeps the OPM spirit alive in Canada. Here’s to more unforgettable performances and the people who make them happen.
