Nearly a million of us call Canada home. We are the fourth-largest racialized community, woven into hospitals, classrooms, businesses, and neighborhoods from coast to coast. Yet for decades the camera and the ballot box have mostly looked past us — reducing Filipino stories to caregivers, nurses, and quiet immigrant struggle while our entrepreneurs, artists, second-generation dreamers, and decision-makers remained off-screen and off the record. Culture taught many of us to work hard, send remittances, and avoid confrontation; geography scattered our votes; and the old gatekeepers of television and politics rarely opened the door.
But the gatekeepers no longer hold every key. A single phone and an internet connection now reach farther than any traditional network once could. The next chapter of the Filipino Canadian story will not be written by waiting for permission.
