Marching to a Shared Beat: Philippine Heritage Band Shines at Vaughan International Music Festival

This year’s Vaughan International Music Festival (VIMF) press conference hit all the right notes—not just with music, but with meaning.

Now on its fourth year, VIMF continues to grow as a vibrant platform for cultural unity. Co-founder and chair Sandra Yang Rako shared the festival’s vision: using music to bridge divides, spark connection, and celebrate diversity. “You don’t need to understand the words,” she said. “You can appreciate the music.”

And this year, one band struck a chord with both heart and heritage.

The Philippine Heritage Band (PHB), the only Filipino marching band of its kind outside the Philippines, was honored with one of VIMF’s inaugural scholarship awards—a recognition not just of their musical excellence, but of their role in youth development and cultural pride. From its humble roots in Toronto to now mentoring young musicians and involving entire families in their mission, PHB is more than a band—it’s a community.

Led by music director Allan Delara, himself a homegrown PHB alum, the band is a symbol of resilience, passion, and Filipino identity. With their scholarship funds, PHB plans to support marching instructors, dance coaches, and resources that continue to elevate the next generation.

As the music played and the cheers rang out, it was clear: the Philippine Heritage Band isn’t just performing—they’re preserving culture and inspiring a new wave of youth to march proudly to their own beat.

🎺 Mabuhay PHB, and thank you VIMF for championing music as a force for unity!
