Another year has passed. The New Year is the perfect time to pause, reflect, and think about what lies ahead. What have we left behind? What lessons have we learned? And most importantly, what do we want to create moving forward?
As a Filipino Canadian, I often reflect on the stories we tell about ourselves—stories of resilience, sacrifice, and love for family. We have so many narratives that we keep repeating. But sometimes, I wonder: what about the stories we haven’t told yet?
Wish #1: More Meaningful Stories
I wish we could share more meaningful stories about us as Filipino Canadians. Stories that go beyond hardship and success. Stories about how we are reshaping our narratives for the next generation. These stories can inspire and guide those who come after us.
Wish #2: Understanding Each Other
Let’s be real: unity can feel like a big dream. But maybe, if we can’t unite just yet, we can at least strive for understanding. If we learn to listen to each other’s stories—the dreams and challenges each of us carries—imagine the progress we can make together.
Wish #3: A Shared Space
Lastly, I dream of a creative space—something as simple as a basketball court-sized venue where we can come together as artists, entrepreneurs, students, and leaders. A place where we can collaborate, share ideas, and explore what it truly means to be Filipino Canadian. It’s not impossible, but it will take all of us to make it happen.
As we step into the New Year, let’s take this moment to begin. Let’s click start, not just as individuals, but as a community of Filipinos in Canada—and wherever we may be. Let’s write our stories for the future and bring them to life together.
